Kings County traces its history
back to 1759, and its current boundaries date back to 1840. It is the third largest
municipal unit in Nova Scotia, serving a population in excess of 60,000.
The Municipality of Kings County is governed by eleven Councillors representing
various Districts, and one of these Councillors is chosen by his/her peers to be
the Chief Magistrate or Warden. Council employs a Chief Administrative Officer and
approximately 50 staff, engaged in administration, planning, recreation, protective
services, engineering and public works.
Property taxes and fees collected by the Municipality support volunteer fire departments
and RCMP community policing, the local share of education costs, and local recreation
and economic development initiatives. The Municipality also takes part in joint
services with three towns and seven villages within the boundaries of Kings County.
The Municipality of Kings County contains the largest concentration of high quality
agricultural land in Nova Scotia and is recognized as having one of the most ideal
climates in Canada for tree fruits, grapes and many vegetables. It is home to a
number of internationally recognized educational and business organizations, whose
graduates, services and products extend around the world. The Municipality is experiencing
steady economic and residential growth, thanks to its strategic advantages, active
communities, ideal climate and quality of life.
